A Healthier 2014: Part 1

Yes, everyone seems to make resolutions for 2014 with the goal of getting healthy. Why not? It's a great goal worthy of sticking to.

But many point out the cost of eating better is more expensive and actually, I don't think this is totally true and long run benefits by far outweigh the short run costs.

My getting healthier starts now and I am considering a 30-day juicing cleanse starting Jan 2.  In prep, I am juicing 1-2 a day now to make the transition.

But what about budget?

I went to my local Shoppers with a $12 budget to make 2 juice smoothies a day for 2 people for the next 3 days.  I purchased the items above for $11.85 including tax.  I purchased a bag of spinach, a bag of oranges, a pineapple, a kiwi, a lime and blackberries.  The blackberries and kiwi were on sale so I plan to return to get more.

Menu Planning

Jan 28th - Jan 30th

  • Breakfast: Pineapple and orange smoothie (adding some spinach as well)
  • Snack: Spinach and Blackberry smoothie (adding some honey and lemon for taste)
  • Lunch ( Jan 30th only): Green smoothie
Eating healthy is doable and doesn't have to be break the bank. I'm on a missing to prove it!

Yes To! Haul

I'm having some difficulties loading my Yes To!  because I lost my cord to load to my computer and uploading to You Tube from my phone isn't working either.  Sigh... Any way here's a pic. Under $30 shipped for everything!

To Wig or Not To Wig?

I've been super duper lazy with my hair. I have no motivation to style it. I don't want bantu knots, a twist out, a blow dry or a flat iron, a wash and go, a wake up and go...nothing! My hair has been in twists for about 90 percent of the time since mid November. I've been taking care of my hair of course. Washing, conditioning, deep conditioning, moisturizing it, etc... but it goes right back in twists.  But of course, I need to leave the house and wearing my old trusty hat is getting old.  So I've decided I'm going to try a wig. I thought about getting braids and even a weave but I don't want that stress on my hair.

Now, I know nothing about wigs. Nothing. Never had one. Never wanted one. I don't think I've even touched one.  And the good thing and bad thing about the internet is that there is so much information, it can leave one (namely me) very very confused.  Luckly, a friend of mine was about to give me a wig 101 lesson so I am no longer totally and utterly clueless.

A local beauty supply store is having a 20 percent off sale on wigs less than $100. Guess who is so there?? ME!  And I have no plans to spend more than $30 on a wig (don't judge me) because as my friend warned me I may not even like how it feels on my head. Some people find it too heavy or unforgettable and to invest a lot in something that I don't even know if I'm going to wear more than once is not the move!

Any advice on wigs? Feel free to leave it in the comments below!

The Acne War Continues

I haven't updated about my acne war in some time. Partly because there was nothing to update. I was loosing. the OCM method didn't work on the acne even though it helped make my skin glow.  The pimples? Not so much.

For a time, I accepted defeat. I mean the acne was taking over, throwing a party and I was the reluctant host. I still wasn't willing to go back to Proactive for reasons I mentioned previously nor did I want to start on Rx. So I just took a break and tried not to think about it. My trying not to think about it resulted in me actually avoiding looking in the mirror. Yes! It was so bad I just didn't even want to look anymore.

Well, its a new day and I'm still searching what will work for me. I am starting to see results with a new regime I've been using for the past few weeks. I am hoping this is it, I am hoping that it will be the long term solution. So I want to share a bit about whats been working for me because if you too suffer from acne perhaps you can give it a shot too.

Routine AM and PM

  • Wash face with cetaphil cleanser (sometimes I'll use black soap)
  • Follow with a honey and lemon mask
  • Use Apple Cider Vinegar toner (mix of the ACV and water)
  • Use one of the following moisturizers: acne.org (its my gf's moisturizer! lol or use grapeseed oil, sometimes both.)  The moisturizer that has worked for me before is called Go Ginger, I'm all out and need to reorder
Here's some important notes:
  • I purchased white wash clothes just to use on my face. That is the only use. I will use those to wipe my face after cleansing or a paper towel.  I started with the white washclothes because it allows me to see if there is anything left on my face after cleansing. I don't think I was always getting my face completely clean
  • I drink ginger tea 2x a day! It helps with inflammation...which acne is. I has great benefits. And it helped with the first few days of using it. There are some days I only take it once and thats OK
  • I use my new DDF I won during an Allure contest. It's basically like a clarisonic. I use it about 2x a week which is less than recommended but it helps get the deep clean I need.
  • I use a clay mask 1x a week and a charcoal mask 1x a week...both serve the same purpose...to help draw out impurities.
  • I use lemon for the dark marks. I also use Equitance dark spot essence I won in a contest (this stuff retails for $125). I actually have started seeing results
  • I also drink a green smoothie every other day and upped my intake of spinach
I have a few new pimples I noticed today. But overall, my face looks so much better. The acne is not as inflamed and I'm actually looking in the mirror.  As with any acne treatment sometimes it gets worse before it gets better, so I'm not judging the fact that I have new pimples as a failure of the regime.  I give myself until Jan 21 to really make a judgement call.

I really need to do some "before" pics but if i take pics now it will be way better than when I started, but I still have a long way to go.

Yes To! Had a $2 sale recently and I racked up on my their Yes To Tomatoes line which is geared towards acne prone skin.  My skin at times seems to work well on a regime and then it seems to get used to it, so I plan to use this line also to switch it up to keep the acne at bay.  I am also looking to try salicylic acid, I hear Paula's Choice has a good product.

Update:  I just did a google image search for "acne".  My acne isn't nearly as bad as those images...I didn't realize it could be that bad. wow. What a nasty condition this is!

Go Retro with Rimmel Scandal Eyes

Next to lip gloss, mascara is my most favorite makeup. I love how with just a few strokes you can take your lashes to illegal lengths! Needless to say, I was excited to receive the Rimmel Scandal Eyes Retro Glam mascara in my Rose Voxbox from Influenster. First thing I thought of was the TV show Scandal...my new fav and so anything with the word Scandal in it would have me hooked.

I received my Scandal Eyes in black. It promises to plump and fan out lashes. The results? Absolutely amazing! Me being a mascara aficionado I'll pretty much try any mascara. And honestly, I never really believe the hype until I can see it for myself..but this product delivers!

Now I did one eye with the intent of taking a pic and loading it to the blog, but of course my camera phone isn't saving the pictures for whatever reason. Nor can I show you a pic of the applicator brush, hopefully the pic above will do. Perfect timing..ugh! Nonetheless, looking at my naked lash and the lash I applied the Scandal eyes to there is a remarkable difference. My lash with the Scandal eyes is plush and long. It's awesome. An amazing transformation. I love it!

The bottom line:
This stuff is the real deal.  Get you some...immediately! They hit the stores in November 2013, so they should be everywhere Rimmel is sold right now! If you get it, let me know how you you like it!
